Sent in error

My apologies for the duplicate of last month's newsletter that was sent out towards the end of April.

It was due to my browser auto-completing a link to the program that sends out the newsletters.

To prevent this happening again, the mailer program will be deleted as soon as the newsletters have been sent.

eBay sellers be wary

eBay, it seems, provides no support for sellers who are victims of buyer criminal activity.

We have been contacted by a seller who reports that when he sold a an expensive laptop on eBay, the buyer filed a false claim that the laptop was not as described. Reluctantly, the seller accepted a return.

When the item was returned, it would not boot. On opening the back, he discovered that the buyer had taken out the 512GB SSD and replaced it with a 128GB SSD. It also seems likely, although he is not sure, that the logic board was changed.

He raised a case on this basis but eBay awarded the buyer a full refund and charged the seller a total of £81 on top of that (reimbursement fee, return postage). So, now he not only does he have a laptop he can't sell, eBay has made a profit from the seller being a victim of crime. eBay also refused to provide information that would allow the buyer to be pursed in a small claims court.

Cancelling your eBay account requires some patience and determination. It can't be cancelled if you have made a transaction in the last 30 days. When I tried to cancel my account online, the website refused to cancel it because my seller account had been 'suspended or restricted'. I had never been informed of any problem with my seller account.

So I used the online chat. Although the agent was polite, the responses were often open ended. So, after typing 'Please close my account' three times, I was passed onto 'a department who could close my account'.

There, I was told that there was nothing wrong with my seller account - 'it must have been a problem with the website'. When you close you account, you will need the majority of information that you used when you set up the account: name, address, telephone number, date of birth etc. It can then take unto 60 days for your account to be finally closed.

Linked-in concerns

I have just decided to close my Linked-in account because of security concerns.

Every time I log in, I have more unauthorised connections despite having changed my password in the past. I don't have these kind of problems with any other site.

I am also getting reports from colleagues that connection requests that were not initiated by them are being sent out.
