Girls get better GCSE results in all-girl schools

Girls at single-sex state schools in England get better GCSE results than those in mixed schools, according to an analysis of the most recent exams.

The study showed much less advantage for boys in single-sex schools.

And the advantage for girls' schools remains even when other factors are taken into account, such as social background or a selective intake. Girls from poorer families in single-sex schools got better GCSEs than their counterparts in mixed schools.

In mixed schools, 55% of pupils got five good GCSEs including English and maths, while in single-sex schools the proportion was 75%. Among these single-sex schools, girls' schools got better results.

But there are some underlying factors skewing these results, such as:

- grammar schools are more likely to be single-sex
- co-educational schools have a higher proportion of poorer pupils
- girls are more likely to get good results

Stanford to run entrepreneur course in London

Stanford, the Californian university, where Google began as a PhD project, is going to offer its 'Stanford Ignite' entrepreneurship course in London for the first time from September.

Universities around the world have been experimenting in ways to teach students beyond their own campuses.

There have been much-hyped attempts to provide courses online, in the wave of massive open online courses, or so-called Moocs.

And other universities have opened branch campuses in other countries, almost like mini-versions of the parent institution.

But the approach adopted by Stanford Graduate School of Business is to take the course and the staff on a global tour, like a rock band or maybe a prestigious theatre company taking its production to new audiences.

When the London course begins in the autumn, it will become the first European city to join this network, with New York, Bangalore and Beijing already part of this academic roadshow.

Better vocational training would reduce youth unemployment

Ofsted chief Sir Michael Wilshaw says that vocational options for teenagers should be much better so the talents of non-academic pupils are not wasted,

The education watchdog warns of a 'one-size fits all' model in England which leaves behind young people who do not succeed in exams. 'We simply have to improve the quality of our technical provision', says Sir Michael.

He also says that complaints about the quality of vocational education have been made for 50 years, but without sufficient improvement.

He warns that vocational training should not be a 'dumping ground for the disaffected and cater just for the lower-ability youngsters'. The Ofsted chief says that some European countries, such as Germany and Switzerland, had lower youth unemployment rates because of a better training system. This reflects a recent survey from City and Guilds that showed how the most developed vocational systems were linked to better rates of youth employment.

At present, Sir Michael says the education system in England does not offer enough opportunities for those who do not succeed at GCSEs. 'The statistics show that those who fail to achieve the required grades in maths and English at 16 make little or no progress in further education colleges two years later,' says the Ofsted head.

He accuses the current system of being 'confusing and ill-defined'. But Sir Michael says such problems are within the context of a school system that had greatly improved.
