Exam schedules take Ramadan into account

This year's key GCSE and A-Level examinations have been timetabled to take into account the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan shifts slightly each year in relation to the Western calendar. It follows the Muslim calendar and, this year, runs from 6 June to 5 July. Pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will sit GCSEs and A-levels between May 16 and June 29 this year.

During Ramadan month, many Muslims fast during daylight hours, pray more and attend special services at mosques. Some will not eat or drink water from dawn to dusk. Head teachers have voiced concerns this may have a negative effect on exam performance.

Links for the calculators are give below, but please read the installation intructions first and be aware that these calculators are beta versions. Mediterranean diet slows brain ageing

A Columbia University study, published by the journal Neurology, shows that people following a Mediterranean-like diet had a larger brain volume than those who didnā??t.

The study indicates that a diet consisting of fruit and vegetables, fish and olive oil but little red meat or dairy products may be associated with losing fewer brain cells due to ageing.

The findings add weight to the theory that a healthy diet can stave off the onset of Alzheimerā??s disease by stopping the brain from growing older.

The difference between the two study groups was about the same as five years of ageing. Study author Doctor Yian Gu, of Columbia University, said: 'These results are exciting, as they raise the possibility that people may potentially prevent brain shrinking and the effects of ageing on the brain simply by following a healthy diet.'

A Mediterranean diet could also halve your risk of heart disease and a Mediterranean diet with extra olive oil cuts breast cancer risk by 68 per cent.
