3.8m UK children do not own a book

The number of children who do not own a book is increasing. Seven years ago 1 child in 10 did not have a book of their own while today the figure stands at a startling 1 child in 3.

The decline in children?s book ownership is of particular concern as the report by The National Literary Trust shows that the number of books in the home is directly linked to children?s reading levels. Of those who have books of their own, more than half are above average readers while a third read at the expected level. The research also found that children and young people who read a book a week or more are more likely to enjoy reading and to do better at school.

The trust launched the survey to coincide with an appeal for public donations towards books and reading support for disadvantaged children.

8-hour sleep myth

Before the late 1600s, street lighting and cheap candles, it seems that our ancestors did not sleep for an unbroken eight hours.

Rather, they went to bed about two hours after dusk and slept for four hours. They then spent one or two hours relaxing: reading, writing, praying, talking, meditating on their dreams. Some even went to visit their neighbours. They then had a second sleep of four hours.

The idea that we must sleep in a consolidated block could be damaging if it makes people who wake up at night anxious, as this anxiety can itself prohibit sleeps and is likely to seep into waking life too.

Drinking water improves exam grades

A study of 447 students has found that those who bring water into the examination hall may improve their grades,

Controlling for ability from previous coursework results, researchers found those with water scored an average of 5 per cent higher than those without.

Consuming water may have a physiological effect on thinking functions that lead to improved exam performance.

Water consumption may also alleviate anxiety, which is known to have a negative effect on exam performance.

Technology blamed for poor spelling

A generation of adults are struggling to spell properly after relying on technology to check their work.

A study has found that about a third of people in Britain are unable to accurately spell words such as definitely, separate and necessary. Teenagers and those in their early 20s were found to be the worst spellers.

Mark Goldring, chief executive of Mencap, the charity for people with learning disabilities, which commissioned the research, said that poor spelling risked hampering school leavers? job prospects.

Apple Mac OSX Keyboard Shortcuts

One of the problems with the Apple remote keyboard is that it doesn't have a trackpad. One of the ways round this is to use keyboard shortcuts. Shortcuts can also help you speed up some of the tasks on your computer. The following are some of the shortcuts that I have found useful:

Access Dockfn-ctrl-F3
Menu Barfn-ctrl-F2
Tool Barctrl-F5
Cycle open windowscmd-`
