Gautama Buddha

"Buddha", or the "awakened one", is the title given to Siddhartha Gautama. He was a spiritual leader and lived in ancient India around the 6th to 5th century BC. Gautama was the founder of Buddhism, one of the world's major religions.

Siddhartha Gautama was born to a noble family in present-day Nepal. He grew up in a protected environment, separated from the real world and its struggles. As Siddhartha grew up, he became aware of life's pain and transience. This deep understanding urged him to leave his privileged life. His aim was to uncover the truth and attain enlightenment.

He spent many years in pursuit of spiritual understanding. He strongly practised self-denial and meditation. He found enlightenment while meditating under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India. The state that Gautama achieved is known as Nirvana - a state of ideal peace. Nirvana is a release from the continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth, known as samsara.

He devoted the remainder of his life to teaching his insights. He travelled across India, offering his teachings on the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. His teachings are now considered the cornerstone of Buddhist philosophy.

The Four Noble Truths are:

  1. The truth of suffering (dukkha)
  2. The veracity of the cause of suffering (samudaya)
  3. The authenticity of suffering's cessation is true (nirodha).
  4. The path to ending suffering holds truth (magga).

The Eightfold Path consists of:

  1. Right understanding
  2. Right intention
  3. Right speech
  4. Right action
  5. Right livelihood
  6. Right effort
  7. Right mindfulness
  8. Right concentration

Buddhism underlines the importance of mindfulness and compassion. Ethical conduct is crucial in the journey to enlightenment. These ideals strive to alleviate suffering. Suffering is an affliction they seek to relieve. In the current era, Buddhism lays claim to numerous followers across the globe. It embraces a range of traditions. This faith also makes up countless practices. It houses a legion of practices, too.
